Woven together with excerpts from Robin Wall Kimmerer's seminal "Braiding Sweetgrass," this immersive short film grounds viewers into concepts of indigenous wisdom, the power of spending uninterrupted time in nature, the spiritual dimension of environmental work, and how joy is an essential ingredient to our activism. Through the experience of this video, hopefully, many will consider that it is valid, powerful, and perhaps even our birthright to offer joy to the environmental movement — and the earth at large. In collaboration with author Margo Farnsworth, this winter The Resilient Activist is publishing “Nature Stories Around the World” - an international video project inspired by nature and biomimicry. ❄️🌲❄️ In this project, voice-over artists from all over the world read aloud children’s books highlighting the intelligence, balance, and relationships within nature. Through this exciting project, we get to expand our programming for children to enhance their knowledge of the natural world and support their emotional well-being in the face of climate change. In this installment of Student Stories, we meet Amy Callirgos Céspedes, a Cellular and Molecular Biology major, international student, and President’s Ambassador. A native of Lima, Peru, Callirgos Céspedes explains how she has benefitted from Lindenwood’s emphasis on experiential learning, particularly within her Cellular and Molecular Biology program. She feels passionate about her goals of becoming a doctor, serving people internationally, and eventually joining Doctors Without Borders. “There’s no way I would be the person I am today if I would have stayed at home,” she said. *SECOND PLACE FOR BEST VIDEO BY THE MISSOURI PRESS ASSOCIATION* At the close of 2018, a curious photo editor wanted to know where the Columbia Missourian had been sending photographers and videographers throughout the year. She generated a map from her research and found there were neighborhoods in Columbia where staff was seldom sent. We wanted to correct ourselves. Since January 2019, visual journalists have been sent to these areas to get to know locals and amplify their voices. These are a few of many stories. The President’s Research, Innovation, and Development toward Excellence (PRIDE) Fund provides faculty with support for projects promoting research, scholarship, and creative activity at Lindenwood University. Headed by Lead XR Disrupter James Hutson, the "Virtual Reality and Educational Gaming Project" is a PRIDE grant-funded university project that created the educational VR experience "Museum of the Lost." Hutson's team also laid the groundwork necessary to develop a VR project creation line in which university constituents can request and receive immersive educational games, thereby producing unique assets to support learning outcomes across campus. Hutson and game design visiting instructor Ben Fulcher seek to establish Lindenwood as a leading developer for immersive reality educational games through interdisciplinary partnerships. Undergraduate and graduate students serve as designers, while faculty lead the project design and partner with community nonprofits to success.
